BURKHAN KHALDUUN БУРХАН ХАЛДУУН

For the nomads of Chinggis Khaan's generation – and for many 21st-century Mongolians – the land and sky are holy, the abode of spirits and fonts of power. In a land of flat, wind-lashed grass, mountains assume a particular importance; of those mountains, Burkhan Khalduun (Бурхан Халдуун GOOGLE MAP ; GPS: N 48°45.728’, E 109°00.629’; What3words: burrito.rewired.will) stands above all other contenders, in some cases physically, but always spiritually. Many Mongolians believe this peak to be the cradle of their nation, as did Chinggis Khaan himself, who returned to this forested massif whenever he sought spiritual guidance from the Eternal Blue Sky.

Because of these connections, locals climb the mountain, topped with many ovoos (shamanistic collections of stones, wood or other offerings to the gods; GPS: N48° 45.430’, E109° 00.300’), to gain strength and good luck. Climbing it is forbidden to foreigners, who may only travel as far as the foot of the mountain; there are plans to create an observation route to make visits worthwhile.

You can camp in the shadow of the mountain, but foreigners may not proceed up its slopes.

This site has more than a dozen hot springs, a collection of log bathhouses and a small Buddhist temple built in honour of Zanabazar (the third holiest leader in the Tibetan Buddhist hierarchy), who frequented the site.

It's located around 22km due north (as the falcon flies) of Burkhan Khalduun.
